Welcome to the WSKF Shotokan Cup – Australia

A National Celebration of Traditional Shotokan Karate

The WSKF Shotokan Cup – Australia is an annual event dedicated to upholding the spirit, discipline, and precision of Traditional Shotokan Karate.

Hosted under the auspices of the World Shotokan Karate-Do Federation (WSKF), our tournament aims to bring together karateka from across the country in a spirit of friendship, humility, and growth.

Each year, the WSKF Shotokan Cup offers an opportunity for students of all levels to test their skills in a format that reflects our core values—technical skills, strong spirit, and traditional form.

🥇 Events & Format

All divisions follow a traditional Shotokan structure, aligned with rank-appropriate grading criteria. Events are designed to both challenge and support the long-term development of each participant.

Events Include:

Kata

  • Rank-appropriate kata based on belt level
  • In line with traditional Shotokan tournament format, a prescribed kata is selected at random by the referee, in the first two rounds
  • Final Round: Free choice kata

Basic Kumite

  • White–Orange: Go-hon Kumite (5-step)
  • Green–Purple: Ippon Kumite (1-step)
  • Brown & Above: Jiyu Ippon Kumite (semi-free)

Shobu Ippon (Traditional Shotokan Rules)

  • Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced categories
  • Optional event for AKF/WKF-experienced competitors
  • Full safety equipment required

Competitors are grouped by belt level and age, ensuring fairness and appropriate challenge.

Who Can Enter?

This event is open to all WSKF members, as well as all other like-minded Shotokan Karate clubs, that share our commitment to traditional karate values.

We warmly encourage dojos across Australia to participate and support the next generation of karateka through focused, meaningful competition.

A Message to Participants

The WSKF Shotokan Cup is more than just a competition—it is a chance to come together in the spirit of shared practice and mutual respect.

Each year, this event provides karateka with the opportunity to challenge themselves, support one another, and continue their development through focused, traditional training and competition.

We encourage all WSKF members and like-minded Shotokan dojos to take part and approach the event with the same commitment and attitude they would bring to any meaningful step in their karate journey.
